Lever/Lever
A lever is a rigid bar that is pivotally positioned around a point (known as a Fulcrum). When you apply a force to the end of the lever, it will tend to rotate the fulcrum in the direction of the applied force. This motion increases the force applied, allowing you to lift or move something that would require a greater amount of force if you were to apply directly to the load.
The distance between the fulcrum of the lever and the point where you apply force determines the most effective movement. This is known as the mechanical advantage. The mechanical advantage increases as the lever is extended. You can calculate the advantage by dividing the distance from the fulcrum to the point where you are applying the force by the distance between the fulcrum and the end of the lever.
Levers can also have a variety of effects based on how the forces are applied. For instance the class 2 lever tends to rotate in the opposite direction to when the force of effort is applied (like a teeter-totter). The forces created when you push on the handle of a front door will result in rotational effects similar to those.
However, levers don't create energy. They simply increase the force you apply by changing a small amount of effort applied over a long distance into a larger amount of force applied over a shorter distance. This is what allows you to complete more work in less time, and it is why levers are commonly used to lift heavy objects or moving large amounts of cargo. The lever principle is employed in everyday tools such as crowbars. hammer claws, fishing rods and your own legs, when you are standing on the hand brake of your vehicle.
